Blackberries have been produced in Serbia for more than 30 years and today represent an important export product. Blackberry fruits rich in antioxidants are represented in various branches of the food industry, not only because of their extraordinary taste, but also as a naturally healthy and medicinal food. The most common blackberry varieties in Serbia are Čačanka and Thornfree. Blackberries are very beneficial for health because they regulate digestion, strengthen the immune system, enable healthy functioning of the heart, prevent cancer and endothelial dysfunction.

Blackberries also provide cognitive benefits and improve memory, control weight, strengthen bones, contribute to skin health, improve vision and eye health, allow normal blood clotting and can also be a beneficial food during pregnancy due to their high content of healthy nutrients. Blackberries are a delicious fruit that belongs to the Rubus genus and the Rosaceae family, which also includes the raspberry and wild blackberry. Native to northern temperate regions, the blackberry is valued as the official state fruit of Alabama and is found in large quantities throughout North America and the Pacific Coast. Blackberry was considered a weed or wild plant by ancient cultures, and its medicinal history stretches back more than 2,000 years.

History reveals the traditional use of blackberry fruit, leaves, bark and root by the Romans and Greeks to treat numerous health conditions, from mild infections to poisonous bites. In fact, during the 18 century Greeks used blackberry for successful treatment of gout, so blackberry is known in Europe as “gout berry”. Recent scientific evidence has contributed significantly to uncovering the therapeutic potential of blackberries and their consumption around the world.
